Classic style will always be “in fashion”. Trends come and go so fast now that it would be impossible for me to keep up with it all. I have always taken “the road less trendy” when it comes to fashion and style, and opted towards the more classic style; a style that speaks to class, grace, elegance and femininity. The point of reference for this “classic style” seems to have always been that of the 60’s, displayed by the likes of style icons Audrey Hepburn, Diahann Carroll and Jackie O, and most certainly have proven timeless and revered. So where does one begin to obtain such style? Starting with the colors of black and white, and some nude and gray, there are a few essential pieces you should have: a straight, a-line or pencil skirt, dress pants, tailored blazer, a white tank, t-shirt and long-sleeved shirt, a great pair of jeans, the ever popular LBD (little black dress), pointed toe stiletto pumps, ballet flats, square shaped purse, diamond or CZ studs, a pair of hoop earrings, pearls, a timeless watch, a cardigan, crew neck and turtleneck sweater, pashminas, and don’t forget pops of color, something in leopard print, and always a pair of big, dark sunglasses. Whew! Sounds like a lot, but most people have at least half of these items in their wardrobe already. And these are all pieces that can easily be mixed and matched with each other for occasion-appropriate wear.
Quality is key to building your classic wardrobe. It’s always a good rule to spend more money on the classic pieces, and less on the trendier items. That way you won’t feel so bad when you look at that crop top hanging in your closet after only a few wearings, or despise the day you bought all five colors of those sky-high platform shoes. Personally, as trends that I may find myself fond of come along, I add them only sparingly to my classic staples for a “fresh” look. Remember, “classic” never goes out of style 🙂
